Taking the ASVAB
Here are some tips to help you succeed
on your test day:
1.If possible, avoid taking the test when you
are tired, ill, injured, or emotionally upset.
Go to bed early the night before the test and get a
good night's sleep.
|
 |
2. Eat a light meal.
Eating a heavy meal just before the test can make
you sleepy and dull your senses |

3. Bring along all supplies you may need.
This includes a pen, several No. 2 pencils, an
eraser, a ruler, etc. Bring eyeglasses if you need
them for reading. |
 |
| |
4. Bring a watch to help you budget your time.
Be sure that you know the amount of time you have
for each subject test. |
 |
| |
5. Refrain from drinking excessive amounts of
liquids.
Don't create the need to waste valuable testing time
by going to the rest room during the test. Use the
rest room before or after the test, not during the
test. |
 |
6. Arrive on time at the test location.
Choose a comfortable seat, if you have a choice, with good lighting and away
from possible distractions such as friends, the proctor's desk, the door, open
windows, etc. |
 |
| |
|
|
7. Inform the proctor of your special needs.
If you are left-handed, have any special physical
problem, or have other needs, ask if some
arrangements can be made so you can compete equally
with the other candidates. |
 |
| |
8. Call uncomfortable conditions to the attention
of the person in charge.
This includes the examination room being too cold,
too warm, or not well ventilated. |
|
|
9. Be confident and calm.
If you follow our study plan of evaluating your strengths and weaknesses,
reading the subject reviews of the areas you are unsure of, and completing the
four test batteries in this book, you will have the confidence you need to score
high on the ASVAB. |
|
|
10. Give the test your complete attention.
Block out all other thoughts, pleasant or otherwise,
and concentrate solely on the test. |
|
|
11. Listen carefully to all instructions.
Read carefully the directions for taking the test
and marking the answer sheets. If you don't
understand the instructions or directions, raise
your hand and ask the proctor for clarification.
Failure to follow instructions or misreading
directions can only result in a loss of points. |
|
|
12. When the signal is given to begin the test,
start with the first question.
Don't jump to conclusions. Carefully read the
question and all the choices before selecting the
answer. |
|
|
13. Answer the question as given in the test
booklet.
Do not answer what you believe the question
should be. |
|
|
14. Work steadily and quickly but not carelessly.
Be sure to keep an eye on the time so you can
complete each section. Note that you will not be
permitted to go back and check your answers on the
subject tests that you have already completed. |
|
|
15. Do not spend too much time on any one
question.
If you can't figure out the answer in a few seconds,
go on to the next question. If you skip a question,
be sure to skip the answer space for that question
on the answer sheet. Continue this way through the
subject tests, answering only those easy questions
that require relatively little time and of which you
are sure. |
|
|
16. Be sure the question number in the test
booklet corresponds to the number of the question
you are answering on the answer sheet.
It is a good idea to check the numbers of questions
and answers frequently. If you skip a question but
fail to skip the corresponding answer blank for that
question, all your answers after that will be in the
wrong place. |
|
|
17. After you have answered every question you
know, go back to the more difficult questions you
skipped in the subject test and attempt to answer
them.
If you are still unsure of the correct answer,
eliminate those choices that you know are incorrect
and make an "educated" guess as to which one of the
remaining choices is correct. If time does not
permit "educated" guessing, guess "blindly" but be
sure to answer all questions in the subtest within
the allotted time. |
|
|
18. If time permits, recheck your answers for
errors.
If you find that your first response is incorrect,
change it to the correct answer, making sure to
erase your initial response completely on the answer
sheet. First answers are usually correct. Don't talk
yourself out of a correct answer by reading too much
into the question. Unless you are sure that you made
a mistake the first time around, don't change your
answer. |
